Ever since they first ventured to the (original) 9:30 Club in 1989, Parliament-Funkadelic has practically owned that place. Many great moments happened there for P-Funk, but in April 2010, fans attending that show had no idea that a great musical legend was making what would be his final stand.

This stop was just part of the second-wing tour, but it has become The Gary Shider Memorial Celebration. George and crew, along with Linda Shider and Gary's sons, made this stop something that Starchild would've approved of. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without Gary Shider's "signature", "COSMIC SLOP".

Another thing that made this stop something was George allowing the 9:30 Club's famous Security Staff to throw up their hands and let the video cams ROLL!! So, along with "Clip" Payne's MyFunk/WeFunk network doing the sanctioned video, us fans and bloggers joined in. And believe me, this is only part of some 2 GBs of footage I've captured on this super throwdown.

Thank You, Gary. Your legend lives on.

  • Does anyone know the chick guitarist's name? She's got a terrible tone but is otherwise way-cool.

  • @martinlickert

That's Joyce "FENDERELLA" Irby, formerly the bass player of the all-female band KLYMAXX (they had 2 huge hits during the '80s: "The Men All Pause"--GET THAT!?, and "I'll Miss You"). The bad tone wasn't her fault, though: She had to sub on guitar and this axe wasn't hers (1), and the 9:30 Club always has rotten sound when it comes to Funkadelic (2). The group is too huge for such a compact space (about 30 members onstage). Besides that, Ms. Irby can tear thangs up.

  • Thank you so much for this!!!! Love,

    Me

Kisses, G-D. It was a great show. My only real complaint:

Mary Griffith, the Blues Ingenue, did NOT Mosh the crowd like she did in April. George Clinton kept her...ahem..."tame", this time around. ^_^

But besides that, it was fantastic.

  • @CosmicFunkOSMOSIS

errrrr, I meant to say "Mary Griffin", not "Griffith". But, she still kicks booty.

  • Thanks 4 sharing!!!, Fly on, Starchild.....\m/

Did the opening act got taped too?, Merk Camp Shiders sons opened 4 the P...

    One Nation..'P'.

  • @bushtales

I wish I would've!! You see, I was afraid that the security would tell me to stop, or confiscate the camera, but George decided to let folks DO IT! I wish I would've known earlier, because Gary's sons had to convince the crowd.

As for Gary's brothers' band, Let The Monkey Go--

I really wish I would've video-taped THEM, because they tore the "dirty 9:30" a New One. Garrett's Uncle on bass sings just LIKE his big brother.

All in all, The Gary Shider Memorial rawked!!

  • @martinlickert Thats Shawna Hall.

Thanks for replying. The chick I'm referring to is in the middle of the shot from about 2:10. Joyce Irby looks black to my eyes, but the girl above looks white to me. I based the comment about her tone on the Sydney gig I saw the other night. Michael's tone was similar and both were playing through Mesa rigs which don't do much for me. Tone aside, I very much enjoying her playing and general stage presence. Kept it on the 1 all night and seemed to be getting in to it.

  • I'm staying in the Cosmic Slop. This show was AMAZING, the best I've seen in a long long time...... Love the love!
