The factory speakers had started to buzz and distort, so it was time to replace them.
Unfortunately, off the shelf speakers with 4 tabs will not fit. Companies on bay and other places will sell you a kit for £35-40 which consists of a ring and a couple of brackets.
I couldn't see the point in this, so I followed the procedure lots of other people have carried out. You cut away the old (crappy paper) speaker and use the basket as a mounting ring. You can then mount any 4 inch speaker you wish.
However the space below the dash is very tight, so the depth of the replacement is critical. The speakers that I know will fit are from the Alpine range:
SXE-1025S (budget quality)
SPE-10C2 (moderate quality)
SPG-10C2 (high quality).
I fitted the SPG-10C2.
They sound great. As with all component speakers, they are a little lacking in bass as they are designed to be used with a sub, but provide greater mid range and clarity and are able to be turned up louder.
TOOLS REQUIRED:
Torx screw bit (turn with pliers as windscreen in way)
Philips screwdriver
Pliers
Superglue
Soldering iron
Wire

Lol you didn't need the stock speaker basket you should have just cut the pig tail off the door side and wired it directly to the new speaker without using the plug!

The basket is used to hold the speaker against the grill. Without it, the speaker would just fall into the dash.
