I had the best times of my life in san francisco bay sailing in my Newport 27' like yours for almost 6 years. I think this particular sailboat is an excellent family boat in all senses and an exciting boat to sail. I almost always sailed alone, put on the autopilot and let the piano music play going upwind. what a feeling! mine had an atomic 4 inboard, and i built a custom hard dodger of wood and plexiglass. all sails custom rollers made by me, and self-tending all the way. enjoy!
I dig it I have the 30 Just got a new jib and it rips. Just had it out in 20 knot winds in the big sea towards coranado isle

Biff (2:10 - 2:25) ran aground three months later, loosing his boat.

I agree, a Newport 27 is small enough to be fun to sail and big enough to be able to go places and take friends along.
