It’s not cheating... though you can only solve this puzzle if you don’t associate the 9 dots as a box in which to solve the problem in... but that's the trick, and the examples can't show us the trick so by seeing the incorrect examples we falsely assume the working area is inside the imaginary box... personally I don't see any difference from that solution and a solution achieved by folding or rolling the paper though!
