GREEN BAY — Several Franklin Middle School students received citations for disorderly conduct after fights videotaped at and near the school appeared online.
Green Bay Police are stepping up patrols after the three fights, which occurred over the past month, Franklin Principal Matt Weller said Thursday. The fights were posted on the YouTube Web site.
Two of the incidents occurred off school grounds, while a third happened in a restroom at the middle school. All were staged, Weller said.
"Because it's on tape, it may become exciting to kids who know better," he said, "and the appeal of getting involved in that kind of illegal activity might spread into kids who just plain know better, and know how to stay away from those things, usually."
Eight Franklin students were disciplined in connection with the fights, district spokeswoman Amanda Brooker said.
Two of the videos were taken with a cell phone, the other with a regular camera, Weller said.
Students in two of the fights were cited for disorderly conduct, and officials expected students from the other fight would be cited soon, Green Bay Police Lt. Todd Leider said late Thursday morning. The videos are an easy way to identify involved students, he said.
"If a kid wants to videotape it, thank you," Leider said. "It makes our job easier. They gave us the best piece of evidence we can ever have. It made our case so easy because they did all the work for us.
"And we're going to prosecute them. If we come across them, we're going to be taking action against the kids who are involved in these fights."
A disorderly conduct citation usually carries a $361 fine, Leider said. But depending on the circumstances of fights, additional citations or charges ranging from trespassing to battery can apply.
School resource officers and police patrols are continuing to work with school officials, offering an increased presence around the time school gets out in the afternoon, Leider said.
Weller said he's talked or sent e-mails to about a half-dozen parents who have expressed concerns about the fights, which apparently have been removed from YouTube. The key is to respond without glorifying or dramatizing the activity, he added.
"The advice is older than I am," Weller said, "that we just have to know where our kids are after school — because not everything they might choose to do is safe."
