Plight of Afghan women on the International Women's Day - Mar.8, 2009

While women around the world celebrated the International Women's Day, in Afghanistan a woman commits self-immolation and Women's Ministry announces to present a new women prison as a gift for Afghan women!

The Washington Post, March 8, 2009:

"Karzai's speech [of March 8, 2009] came one day after a widow in western Afghanistan burned herself alive in what relatives called a desperate move to escape her miserably poor life.

Jan Bibi, 53, lived with family and made a little money washing clothes for neighbors, officials said. On Saturday, she walked into her room, poured gasoline over her body and set it on fire, according to Dad Mohammad, police chief of Obe district.

The family rushed her to a hospital where she died, Mohammad said."

I read the book by about Meena the founder of RAWA (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan) and it changed everything I thought about Afghanistan. Her story must be told as it tells the real story of the roots of what is going on there.

I hope other people will read it too.

I complety agree. Some of these "women's" prisons are for women who have been rapped. It's a place for punishment for the women but it does however protect them from being murder (honor killings) by their family's for being disgraced.

Is this prison supposed to be a place to house women dangerous women. What logic is this? Perhaps this will be a safer place to be in than at home or in school where the are brutally attacked just being alive.
