Harry McCracken, the founder and editor of Technologizer, says we've reached a moment in which processing power is enabling software developers to add functionality that was previously only avaialble in PCs to a range of devices. The result will be an environment in which our computing needs are spread among a range of devices, and even our car dashboards.
Transcript: We're starting to see dual core processors and really potent graphics make their way into mobile devices. Up until recently, there were some things you wanted to do with a mobile device that were just too computationally demanding to be done, such as really serious video processing. Now, developers of software can start to think about that because they will have the horse power to do it. The world ahead of us is a world in which the PC still exists and it's not one thing that's going to replace the PC, it's everything. So, you probably still will have a laptop with a large screen and a big keyboard, but you'll also have a smart phone, and maybe a tablet and an ereader. And your car dashboard will start to become a computing environment. So it's not one thing that's going to dominate the world the way the PC did for the first thirty years, it's everything.
You see alot of people talking about the consumerization of business technology. It used to be that business apps set the standard for quality. And these days, a lot of the consumer stuff is better done than the business tools, and business people are starting to expect their world to have the same and ambition that the consumer stuff does.
My job is writing about gadgets and playing with stuff that I do anyway. I think all these devices are neither purely work nor purely play. And any interesting Internet gadget may be extremely functional but it's not going to be a success unless it's also enjoyable to use.
