Acclaimed science-fiction author Neal Stephenson reads the introductory chapter from his book, "Anathem."

-----

What if we lived in a world where the long-term was taken seriously?

At an event hosted by the Long Now Foundation, science fiction author Neal Stephenson reads from his latest novel ANATHEM. Afterwards he participates in a conversation with Stewart Brand and Danny Hillis.

Neal Stephenson is the best-selling author of such novels as Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle. He is best know for writing science fiction (in the postcyberpunk genre) and his interests often lead him into investigations of society, mathematics, cryptology, currency and the history of science. Anathem is his latest novel.

  • Anathem is the best book I've ever read. Screw Harry Potter. I choose Anathem.

  • Read Snow Crash if you haven't already. Only then will you understand the power of the POON.

Neal is one of my literary heroes.

  • Zenaxe66 is a Procian.

  • Moronic and ill-informed. How much of his stuff have you actually read? Stephenson's writing (particularly the Baroque Cycle) is clever, witty, consistent and often profound. I suspect that you, on the other hand, possess none of these qualities. Except that maybe, you can be consistently annoying.

  • Stephenson pronounces "Orolo" with the stress on the first syllable instead of the second.

    Weird.

  • I have waited a long time to see Neal in the flesh. He doesn't seem to get out much so this is a special treat for me.

  • Science diction fiction...creative writing, less interesting reading...especially all the strange terminology. I assume that the audience was familiar with the reader. They were very responsive.

    Thanks
