  • @MrCancer1965 Well.....It's not that they chose Johnnie Taylor to record this particular song....He was Sam's replacement when Sam left in 1957. J.T. went on to sing several classics for the group including: Out On A Hill, The Love of God, When The Gates Swing Open and so fourth and So On. So when Johnnie left the group in '60 or '61, Jimmy Outler took his place. If I am not mistaken Stand By Me Father was Johnnie's swan song with the group.

  • For years I thought this was Sam Cooke singing this song. But he left the Soul Stirrers to start his solo career. So they chosed Johnnie Taylor to do the song, which was meant for Sam Cooke. The soulful legend sounds a lot like the gospel legend.

  • I love Sam Cooke

  • you sing it sam cooke

  • One more thing. SAR was based in LA. Sam started the label with J.W. Alexander of The Pilgrim Travelers and S.R. Crain of The Soul Stirrers, Sam's former group. SAR stood for Sam, Alex, and Roy. I don't know what collection you have, but if you get Sam Cooke's SAR Records Story, it tells how the label got started and it's history. It's a 2 cd set of recordings. 1 cd is all Gospel and the other deals with the secular recordings of the label.

  • @davidyolt Actually this song was recorded in either Chicago or LA. Those are the only two places Sam Cooke recorded his artists. Sam Cooke only went to England twice and both times were to perform. He never recorded over there. My Dad was a close friend of Sam's, whom Sam wanted to record, although my Dad refused (he wanted to stay with Gospel) he never mentioned having to go to England to record. And a lot of studios recorded Blacks in the 60s. All the labels Sam recorded with were White owned

  • @nikki213ify I think you've lost your mind thinking you can outsing Johnnie Taylor on his own song.

  • Sorry this is Johnny Taylor leading this song

  • first time i heard it and it instantly made me cry... so much love for sam cant bear it.

  • Yes thats Johnnie Taylor and I am long time fan of JohnnieTaylor's
