Edward Randy is undoubtedly the most action packed game I can think of. From the first time you press start to the final credits there is never a point where you have time to think about what's coming next or plan ahead. It has all the Jumping, punching, kicking , swinging, and sliding that is a hallmark of this type of game and then some. To say it is frenetic is a gross understatement.

This game sees you controlling the heroic Edward Randy as he fights alongside.. Edward Randy.. Possibly his evil twin? Randy Edward? Anyway you'll be fighting literal hordes of footsoldiers every moment and jumping from all manner of moving vehicles, swinging to and fro all the while. Armed with only what appears to be a whip with a knife edge on the end and their wits, they combat the Nazi-esque horde with devil-may-cry panache.

The controls are very smooth and there are lots of movement and attack options open to you which change with context, and some fun digitized samples and the usual over-the-top effects Data East was typically known for.

Some problems - music is tinny though fitting, and the shouting can be trying at times, Edward could possibly be the estranged love child of Lil' John and Terry Bogard. The game is a bit on the easy side and the health system is bound to confuse most players, sometimes giving the impression of invincibilty, and othertimes seemingly killing you randomly. The game is also relatively short.

Overall what you get with Edward Randy is a non-stop thrill ride filled with imaginative set pieces, and absolutely no filler. Story is told during game play and the most rest you'll get is the three second transition between the "Chapters".

This is a game from a bygone era of gaming.

Thanks to Mowtendoo for being the right side player.

  • Its like what I would imagine a Brock Samson arcade game would be like!

  • Look up "Brute Force mame".

  • One very interesting fact about this game is that it was one of the things that Treasure's games were inspired by. Even Treasure's character artist HAN was such a hardcore fan of the game that he named two characters in Guardian Heroes, Edward and Randy, in homage.

  • I was not aware of that! It just goes to show you how potentially influential these games could have been under different circumstances.

  • is there another name for this game?

  • Yes, It is also known as just The Cliffhanger.

  • @StarFoxAutobot It pays homage to that, Hayao Miyazaki and Buster Keaton.

  • Reminds me of Indiana Jones in quite a few ways.

  • I'll be honest, I was never able to decide if this was really a good game or not, but the over the top action and set pieces made it an enjoyable ride nonetheless. Thanks for introducing it to me!

  • The Weapon Reminds Me Of Kratos From God Of War Series LOL

  • @BigBangBlitz But that can confuse anyone, whether it's Stern's laserdisc arcade or the NES title based on the Sylvester Stallone film.

  • Wow, that is action packed.

  • @FireBomberBassist thats why the gameplay is good. halo and cod fufill the great graphics, shitty gameplay market.

  • i love this game, and thought i was alone in remembering it...it is one of my very favorite games, and plays like a cross between metal slug and castlevania... the only other brawlers i can think of that are as good AND under rated would have to be guardians or armored warriors...oh, growl was good too.

  • What a great looking game.

  • Looks like the greatest action scenes in Hollywood history thrown together into one game. ^^

Only one little detail is missing to make it perfect: Hit sparks. I like to know if I'm hitting something or not. ^^°
