I went back to the Fastrip today. lots of people had been asking for what was left of the building. So here it is :)

I'm from NH, we never get anything like that here. I had seen this video and a week later we had severe storms moving through and the possibility of a tornado. I got word that there was a funnel cloud a town over, probably 10 minutes away, so I thought back to this video and figured I would run for the cooler.

It looks like you were the one Area of the entire building that didn't fully collapse. Whoever s idea it was to go into the freezer saved everyone's life that day. So harrowing.

If I had been in this situation, I would have panicked like crazy! That was some intense damage from what I would call the devil's wind! I would never want a tornado like that, but the mother nature always have her own evil way of destruction!

In general the safest place to hide when a tornado warning is issued for your area, is the basement of your house. If you don't have one, then hide in a small space with no windows or glass and cover yourself with a mattress or something else to shield you from flying debris.

As i said, i'm assuming you guys ended up in this gas station as an absolute last resort, otherwise i would honestly consider scolding you guys over the extremely risky choice of shelter chosen.

yeah....this is mother nature at her worst, an EF5 tornado. These folks were EXTREMELY lucky to have survived, because they were hiding out in a gas station which isn't very likely to be a very safe place (you have glass doors, windows, bottles, gas pumps outside which are extremely flamable). But I'm guessing these guys had no other choice, however even the most well-constructed buildings can be torn apart by an EF5.

The good news is that within the last couple of years, Joplin is starting to come back, the trees will take some time, but the homes, and the businesses are springing back up again, I'm glad that our community has done so much. (fun fact: brad pitts grandma lives in joplin and he donated 250000 dollars towards helping us :)
