only Woody would think to shoot this shot as though you are observing 2 random people on a street corner from your vantage point of a restaurant or diner... you don't know them and never will but you glance at them see them part and probably go back to looking at the menu or eating...never giving them (and the life they had together) any thought again... what a sad and beautiful ending to this movie... love how Woody looks as though he will say Wait!! but then turns and leaves too... amazing

i personally feel it's a perfect metaphor for life itself. sad ending, but worth the effort for the bits of happiness to experience beforehand.

On this day in 1977 {April 20th} the Woody Allen movie "Annie Hall" opened nationwide in the U.S.A. and across Canada...
The film was first shown a month earlier at the 'Los Angeles Film Festival'...
It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning four; 'Best Picture', 'Best Actress' {Diane Keaton}, 'Best Director' {Mr. Allen}, and 'Best Screenplay'...
The one it didn't win was for 'Best Actor' {Mr. Allen}...
Mr. Allen celebrated his 77th birthday this past December 1st...

Upper West Side on 63rd. The building in the background is Lincoln Center/Avery Fischer Hall. The point of view shot from the restaurant would now be PJ Clarke's. Not sure if it was the same restaurant in the 1970s when Annie Hall was shot.

My mistake - 63rd and Columbus. There is a restaurant there and the school. Not sure if it's the same, though.

Does anyone know what part of New York City this was filmed in or filmed at? Does the restaurant through the window still exist? What street it's on?

I don't think the ending is that sad. In fact It's satisfying in a way as it shows you very realistically that (such is life). It shares a to-have loved and lost experience that many of us have had and the experience is related comically and with an irony. I find most of Woody Allen movies very heart warming in fact.
