Be extra vigilant if you're planning on touring Ireland any time soon. A network of privatised mobile speed cameras is set to go live across the country's roads as of today.
The cameras are due to be deployed gradually over the coming months and are expected to be fully operational by February 2011.
The scheme is part of a five-year, 65 million euro government contract with the GoSafe consortium to target black spots for speed-related traffic collisions.
15 van-mounted mobile cameras will be introduced in November 2010.
A total of 45 van-mounted mobile cameras will aim to provide over 6,000 hours of speed checks across the country. Some 600 areas, 60 of which are in Dublin, will be periodically monitored by the transit vans, which are bright yellow and clearly marked as speed-monitoring devices.
Although the new Scheme will have no impact on speeding enforcement currently carried out by the Garda, motorists caught speeding by the new cameras will be liable to incur penalty points and fines of up to 80 euro, which will be administered by the Garda.
A list of the areas that will be monitored by the cameras is available from the traffic section of the Garda website, www.garda.ie.
As a result of a fire one camera van is out of action and now there are 14!
YEAH!
