There's a difference between insulting a person on an intimate level, which is what you just described, and something as abstract as a piece of cloth with colours on it.

If someone would buy a portrait of Mitchell's wife and piss on it, that person could say "I merely squirt liquid on my own property, what's the big deal?" I don't know about Mitchell, but some people would be offended by something like that, even though it's technically true and all. And Mitchell knows it. Btw, I'm a fan, so I'm not bashing him, just this point. He's a smart guy who is right about some issues and wrong on others.
