Well ... I try to translate:

He is singing about Potatos, but not just about Potatos. He was born in a region where the farmers grow "Erdäpfel". It's meant as a dark joke, he uses the meaning: "Erdäpfel" in a melancholic manner, as a "Metapher" for that Region (Waldviertel).

The song is not really funny, it ends with the sentence "..I schau aus wia a Erdäpfel" - "des is OK, solang i ma die Erdäpfel ned von unt auschaun muaß" /
