  • how can i do when i have a character already with textures? cause when apply the two tone shade, my texture disappears

  • @karadanianoI when you texture something you are attaching the texture to the colour of the shader, so when you apply a 2 tone shader you are replacing the shader on that mesh. To get a two tone shader with the textures you want you will have to make the shader, then assign the texture to the colour of the two tone shader. As its a two tone the colour can have two values (two textures) like a ramp, so you will need to add in one light and one dark version of your texture.

  • @youmayatutorials the option to assign the texture is in the hypershade or in the tone shader?

  • @karadanianoI on the shader there should be a little ramp part for the colour, select one of the colours (by clicking the small circle on the top of the ramp) then to the left where it says "selected color" there should be a checker box next to the color box, click this checker box and it should bring up the "create render node" window where you can select a texture or "file" to load in a custom texture like a .jpg or .png

  • where i can find this tool in maya?

  • @karadanianoI there should be a shelf called toon, or you can find a toon menu when you switch to rendering (to the far left drop-down). Also this toon was only introduced around maya 7 i think so if you have an older copy it wont come with it.

  • @offdutyninja007 this wont mess with uv's but sometimes you might need uv's. Think of it as a ramp and the ramp is calculated with the light in that area, so if its bright it shows the top of the ramp and if its dark in an area it sows the bottom, so then you could attach textures as normal and have the UV's set up for those textures and it basicaly shows the different textures depending on the light in that area. So you can create a normal and dark texture for a character and add it to the toon

  • will this mess with my textures or uvs?

  • @youmayatutorials

i see.. just as i imagined.. thanks!

  • @eadlie24 This tutorial is quite old there might be new toon things out there but in this tutorial im using maya too shaders which use ramps, all toon shaders will use ramps in some way, its a way of lighting so the bottom of the ramp will be the unlit area and the top the lit area and different interpolations such as stepped will give the harsh change in colors in to toon shader. Main advantage of making custom shaders is its custom, so you can do what ever you want where as presets are limeded
