First off, he is alive and well in Deep Gap, NC, USA. Secondly, how does he do it? He is one of the best flat-pickers ever. I think of Doc as the Louis Armstrong of flat-picking guitar. There are faster players, more innovative players (maybe), more technically astute player (but that can never be by much, but he is the best. Simply the best. I selfishly wish he was more active (he's retired) and played more gigs.

This guitar is Doc's first Gallagher, "Ole Hoss" and I have played it! Not like Doc, but played it nonetheless.

Saw DOc and Merle once and Doc and Michael Coleman once; both shows absolutely astounding. Met both Doc and Merle during breaks, absolutely nice people. They will leave a rather large hole in music when Doc goes to his reward.
He goes from holding a banjer to a guitar. Instantly.
