Shot on the morning of Saturday October 25, 2008 at Scarborough, NY.

Amtrak is detouring/diverting Empire Service and Ethan Allen trains which normally originate/terminate at Penn Station, New York (NYP) into Grand Central Terminal (NYG) this weekend (and last).

This diversion is due to the replacement of switches by Metro North at CP-12 - the interlocking where Amtrak trains access the Hudson Line from the "Empire Connection". This interlocking is just north of Spuyten Duyvil and just south of Riverdale stations and was known as "DV" before being numbered.

This video features trains 281 (NYG-NFL) and 280 (NFL-NYG) as well as a small taste of the Metro North trains that run here. For more see my other videos and for a longer version of this video use the link above.

Lets take a moment to recall, that as originally designed, the P32s had movable 3rd rail shoes, originally designed to:

[be raised] for high speed operation.

[lowered] to contact overrunning (LIRR Style) 3rd rail.

[lowered further] to contact under-riding (NYC style) 3rd rail.

Recall that doing so would've resulted in a tensioned 3rd rail shoe, which proved troublesome in testing and AMTK opted to remove this function at an early stage. The MN units were built without it.

  • @nhlives In the event that Amtrak returns to GCT (which is slightly, and I say it isn't all that likely, but I hope), Amtrak's going to need to do something about the third rail shoe dilemma. In fact, the same goes for MNRR if they serve Penn Station through the Hudson LIne via the Empire Connector, which might happen once the East Side Access project is completed. But who knows, it probably won't happen knowing things.

  • hey, great video. I love the M7s, they sound like spaceships

  • @MrZkr123

Their P32s did as originally designed but they proved to be unreliable and sometimes caused problems while raising/lowering, etc....

  • Amtrak should have both shoes for over and under.
