I take no credit for the photos. Frank in 1939 with Harry James Orchestra. This is my first attempt, so please be kind! Song written by Harry James, Jack Lawrence and Alberto Pestalozza (see, I don't take credit for the song either!)

  • A very uninspired vocal by the very young Frankie. The arrangement sounds as dated as 1939, despite James' excellent trumpet solo. A much better & more swinging recording that year of the same song was made for Decca by Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters with jazz violinist Joe Venuti. Crosby ends the tune in Italian (surprised Italian Sinatra didn't).

  • James' solo does carry this piece a little. Bing, especially at this stage, was a far better singer technically, although I dislike the way the Andrews Sisters get in the way on that track, I'd have preferred him to sing it straight. Crosby in 1939 was a star in his own right; Sinatra was a boy singer for a star trumpeter, restricted in many ways from the freedoms he enjoyed later.

  • @marcyhead I dont think there is anything Crosby sang better than SInatra.

  • I disagree. Yes, there were certain aspects of his singing that declined in the 50s, such as the smoothness of his delivery, his ability to hit the high notes, and the lustre of his voice. However, he improved in every other way, such as tone, timbre, ability to hit the low notes (heavy smoking has its uses!), technique, and most importantly, in emotional depth.

  • @LondonDryJin Sinatra has always had perfect singing technique.. I sing with a voice a bit similar to his and I can tell you from a year experience of trying to sound like him, that he has perfect voice control in his first recordings.

  • What do you mean when you say that this song has been write by Harry James? This piece is from 1898, far before James birth! :)

  • @talbotmundy The musical years late 20s -1933 were, in my Opinion the best years all round. There was a certain sound which disappeared from 34 onwards. It also explains why Annette Hanshaw's recordings (all from 1926-33) are all excellent . Then listen to georgia on my mind by Red Mckenzie from 1931. Frank Sinatra's best stuff was from 39-49. He had a throat op at that time and was never quite the same. However, the changing musical 'sound' wasn't like before. In the 60s jazz became tinny.

  • @talbotmundy The years 28-33 were, in my pinion the best years all round. There was a certain sound which disappeared from 34 onwards. Frank Sinatra's best stuff was from 39-49. • @closedcircle1 Yes, you're right. I was overgeneralizing--thinking of Crosby's later "buh buh buh buh" years. I've heard his early stuff when he was singing tenor (and he cited John McCormack as his inspiration), and some of those recordings are incredible.

  • @talbotmundy I tend to agree to a point. However thnk Bing Crosby's best stuff was done between 1929-34 and included some excellent sounds. My favourites are Love thy neighbour, Temptation, and Brother can you spare a dime. Each of which I've yet to see bettered.

  • @songster56 His voice changed late 40s because of a throat operation. I believe Frank's best stuff was done between 1939-49. Particularly his radio recordings from 1943, some of which you can catch on yourtube.

  • Lovely....Thanks for sharing this golden oldie.
