Okefenokee Joe teaches Georgia children about wildlife with an emphasis on snakes.

Joe, an ecological expert, environmentalist, preservationist, singer, songwriter, wildlife expert, snake seeker, environmental educator, guitar guru and all-around home-grown Georgia gator genius, appeared at the Mary Vinson Library in Milledgeville on Thursday, July 16, 2009. This marked his third appearance in Milledgeville at the Mary Vinson library for the day and the third year of his appearance for the library's summer reading program.

Okefenokee Joe is a passionate enviornmental and ecological expert who combines entertainment with facts about local wildlife, with an emphasis on snakes and how to identify snakes and their behavior to stay safe and help keep nature and the outdoor world intact.

Joe may be found at his Web site, okefenokeejoe.com, or may be contacted by calling 1-800-832-2099
or e-mailing okefenokeejoe@okefenokeejoe.com.

I am not working for Okefenokee Joe; at the time of this video, I was a private citizen who attended the third show and decided to take my camera along for possible videos and photographs.

Video is slightly shaky, but accurate, and was taken with a Sony Cybershot model DSC-H2.

  • Minor doesn't matter-- try being bitten by one and seeing if you care if it defines as 'venemous' or 'poisonous'. :P

  • I know him personaly

  • Pretty cool! I remember when I was in elementary school a little over 10 years ago he came to our gym and gave a presentation like this.

  • Joe rules! I have been a fan for many years.

  • He is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he is awsome

  • he came to my school 2day

  • he's communicating with a group of young children. most children in elementary school understand poisonous before venomous, hence tailoring the words to fit the audience. i saw Okefenokee Joe back in the mid 80s when i was in kindergarten and he was quite entertaining and relayed information in a way that children could understand and grasp.

  • Um...There's no such thing as a "poisonous" snake - there are venomous snakes, but no poisonous ones. "Venomous" refers to toxins which are actively transfered (e.g., a bite) from one critter to another; "poisonous" refers to toxins being passively transfered (e.g., by an animal that eats something with toxins in it). Minor detail, but worth getting right.
