Michael Verduin demonstrates tying his cap spider, an extremely effective pattern for sunfish.

Filmed at the 2003 Pineywood's Fly Fishers Spring Workshop in Lufkin, TX.

Michael is one of the most creative tyers I have ever met, and this is probably his simplest pattern. Although simple, I can vouch for the fact that this fly will catch sunfish, even when other flies won't.

  • Simple flies are sometimes the best. Notice you say "was." I take it he is no longer with us. Thin-ness and ball cap suggests perhaps cancer. Thanks for the video. Never met him.

  • Michael passed away about 6 months after the video from a very long battle with cancer. He was one of the most creative tiers I've ever met and an excellent fisherman. His Catalpa Worm Fly is a work of art but also a very effective fly for fishing. Thanks for the comment.

  • Notice the vice, I have it and it is my favorite to tie with.

  • what a treat! while doing a program for the "jack sparks ffers" last nite they told me about this video. mike was a dear friend and i miss him. the last time i got to visit with mike he called and asked if i would take him paddling in his wooden canoe for some bream fishing. i met him at a little east tx lake and we spent the morning fishing and before we said goodbye for the final time he handed me one of his fly rods and a box of "cap spiders" with a promise to take them fishing.

  • Mike was a gentle and friendly soul. I did not ever get to fish with him but saw him tie and speak at Dallas Fly Fishers a few times.

One of my best days ever was with a Cap Spider. I caught twelve or more huge green sunfish on a cap spider, one right after the other. Whew!

    thank you Mike.

  • Michael was an amazing fly tyer, a wonderful friend, and a marvelous person. There are very few videos of his tying. Enjoy the video, learn to tie the Cap Spider, and fish that Cap Spider! Bowfin47
