Sometimes James Kalm just turns on the camera, and magic happens. While covering last night's opening (March 24, 2011) of James Siena's recent paintings, drawings and prints, Jerry Saltz very graciously allowed the Kalm camera to tag along for a brief chat about the new work. We even get to see Jerry reconsider some pieces, and have a chance to see how critical thinking evolves spontaneously over the course of an evening's viewing.

  • Charlie Finch rips James Siena and Thornton Willis in his April 22, artnet article , and goes on to state, "there will always be morons like Panero, Kalm and Perl who think that they are gazing at the sky." However he doesn't mention Jerry Saltz on his "moron list" who also seems to enjoy the Siena show. Why?

  • Whery intererest for my,but where is new russian avantgarde?

  • Jerry seems to be a likeable guy. He likes to talk!!! lol

  • @jpapare You're right. It is good enough to just say "I like it". I looked up more Jerry Saltz art appreciation videos and also read some of his book where he goes further into his approach to looking at art. It is refreshing.

  • I would hate to be judged by the folks who left such harsh comments. I enjoyed this off-the-cuff dialogue for just what it was. Can't that just be o.k.? I think it is great to see someone who is not doing pedantic posturing talking about art, top of his head, and juggling his own incites. One rarely sees that process.

  • Jerry Saltz is to pretzels and chips as James Siena is to heavy bodied mediums

  • Sure ain't no Clement Greenberg or Harold Rosenberg. Can this guy make or break an artists career?

  • Jerry seemed to have an underlying anger that day...he just wanted to drop bombs and leave LOL

  • Like the work. The mathematical commentary is pure nonsense -- self organizing systems, fractals, etc. Like 1:07 a bunch. This of course must be a 112th order Feynman diagram for Bremsstrahlung. Thanks mucho Jaime.

  • I know they bear the same initials but I prefer James Siena to Jerry Saltz...
