By sheer luck I happened across this workover rig working in the middle of a residential neighborhood in the Montebello oil field. The well appears to be "Monterey 35" (API#03712584), an oil and gas well that hasn't produced much of either in recent years (269 bbl in 2005, a high of 1,385 bbl in 1983). On some maps it appears marked as an "observation" well. Operator is Southern California Gas Company. No pumpjack on site - just a false shed covering the wellhead. Not sure what work they were doing on the well.

  • Update: This well produced 2,370 bbl in 2010. Shortly after this video was taken in August 2009, it produced a small amount for two months, went idle, and then began producing fully in July 2010 at the rate of a few hundred bbl/month.

Since I didn't analyze the video as hard as you did, I now see that this rig is a "double, double" rig. I thought it was a "double, triple". But still, don't make such simple things such a personal issue. I'm just now starting to learn about the oil field and find all this stuff fascinating.

Nope, first time I've seen a workover rig.

  • @derekdz you can see two joints of tubing standing back on the left side of the derrick, but the thick black part closest to the mast is RODS! they are hanging in the pickle fingers, ON BOTH SIDES! i've never seen a production rig that racks tubing along the mast. thats the whole point of a TUBING BOARD!! Have you ever been on a production rig?

  • @derekdz The well is producing again, so they weren't plugging it when this video was taken.

  • @gonfishin333

    Looks like tubing to me.

  • @derekdz you don't see the rods in the fingers? on both sides?

  • Prolly stripping it out
