It's great to have an old 4x4 as a second vehicle! This truck does not get driven as much as it should, and sometimes that causes things to wear out from lack of use (like a radiator cap seal). This should express that it is important to check your vehicle's coolant system with the RADIATOR CAP ON after checking the fluid level!
If you have a problem with overheating, check (hoses then)
(1) amount of coolant
(2) belt that drives water pump
(3) radiator core blockage/rust
(4) thermostat opening when it should?
(5) fan/fan clutch/fan switch working?
(6) radiator cap holding pressure?
(7) water pump (squeeze hose to check)
(8) ignition timing
(9) improper grade/lack of oil?
(10) bad temperature gauge/sensor
Good luck! Hope your fix was the easy 5 minute fix mine was! Also this vehicles operating costs (insurance, registration, upkeep/repairs), average less than $1000/year. Too cheap to let it go!

  • looks like a blown head gasket to me dude

  • I copy what you are saying but it was actually just leaking out at the top and burning off. It was not apparent at all in traffic.

Fortunately, I have changed fluids and can authoratively tell you the head is fine. (no water in oil/vice versa)

  • Leaking radiator cap also keeps the pressure in the system from building up. Lower pressure means the coolant will boil at a lower temperature.

  • In this cooling system there is a line at the base of the radiator cap that runs to the radiator reserve. That is where is pressure variance runs to and back - but clearly there should be a standard level that it is at, at the end of every drive.

That was not happening because of loss of water at the cap, it should have been running to the reserve down the line.

  • Actually, That would be a blown head gasket.

  • I PROMISE you, Its the head gasket letting pressure from the cylinders into the cooling system. they're known for that. Mine did the same thing.

  • Congrats on having vision :)

    wanna sell? straight axel?

  • 22rs do not like heat. I highly advise to never run it hot you will be sorry. The 22r is a tough ass motor but she don't like to be too hot trust me... i've replaced bookoo coolant devices and head gasket twice and me truck was still overheating and getting coolant into the oil until i found out my timing cover had a hold in it from the timing chain rubbing it so yea.... plus radiator cap holds pressure in the system if its off or leaking thats a big no no.

  • its better warping or cracking a cyl head then the block... iron!!!

  • watch your temp on these 22r and re motors.they will crack a head easy trust me i cracked one on my last motor.

  • Shut the engine down before you damage IT, not the camera...
