Everybody with a portable media player knows how to rip CDs to get your music onto your device, but what about DVDs? In this video, I'll explain how to use HandBrake to rip your DVDs so you can watch movies on your laptop, iPod, or other device.
DVD ripping is in a legal gray area; only rip DVDs that you have paid for and legally own. If you rented it or borrowed it from a friend, it's illegal to rip.
Download HandBrake: www.handbrake.fr
Download VLC: www.videolan.org/vlc
where does the VLC program come into play?

@whizba42 Handbrake uses VLC to read/decrypt the DVD. If you try using Handbrake without VLC installed, your video file will just be a mess of static.

@Prime1153 i can rip dvds i own, but what about dvds i get from my local library or netflix? is that legal too?
Myytmovies 3 weeks ago
@Myytmovies Nope, sorry. If you are not paying for complete, permanent ownership of the DVD, ripping it is illegal. Basically, lending/borrowing a DVD from a library, a friend, Netflix, Redbox, or Blockbuster (if there's still one out there) isn't the same as owning it.

Hi man.
Im having problems with ripping it on ipad format.
shoud I try to rip it on the Nornal option?

@SakarulaFG Don't use Normal; the file it outputs isn't compatible with iTunes, and therefore the iPad as well. Try the Universal preset that I use in the video.
