Mexico Interior Secretary Blake dies in helicopter crash, muere secretario de gobernacion

Mexico's Secretary of the Interior, Francisco Blake Mora, has died in a helicopter crash outside Mexico City, officials say.

The helicopter was travelling to Cuernavaca in neighbouring Morelos state for a meeting of prosecutors when it went down.

All eight people on board were killed. It is not clear what caused the crash.

Mr Blake, 45, was appointed interior secretary in July last year, overseeing police forces fighting drug cartels.

"Unfortunately the interior secretary, his [assistants] and the helicopter crew were found dead," government spokeswoman Alejandra Sota said.

The interior secretary is Mexico's senior cabinet position and the top official after the president, with responsibility for domestic affairs and security.

Mr Blake was President Felipe Calderon's fourth interior secretary. One of his predecessors, Juan Camilo Mourino, was killed in a plane crash in Mexico City three years ago.

Presidential spokeswoman Alejandra Sota said that Interior Secretary Blake Mora was traveling to a prosecutors meeting in the neighboring state of Morelos when the helicopter went down in southern Mexico City.

The secretary of the interior is the country's top official after the president, overseeing internal political affairs and security.

Francisco Blake Mora was appointed secretary in July 2010. President Felipe Calderon lost another interior secretary, Juan Camilo Mourino, in a plane crash in Mexico City in November 2008.

Blake Mora, 45, started his political career in the mid-1990s as an official in his native Tijuana and served as a federal congressman through the 2000s.

Calderon appointed him as interior secretary in July 2010.
