KLTV talks to Trinity Mother Frances Cathy Fieseler, MD about the House Bill that would require Texas high schools to recycle old helmets.
-Texas high schools wouldn't be able to pass aging helmets down to the junior varsity football teams under legislation approved in the House.
The bill, tentatively approved Tuesday, would require schools to replace helmets after 16 years of use. Rep. Eddie Lucio III said the measure is intended to prevent concussions that could be caused from worn-out equipment.
"The long term effects of head injuries are becoming more and more of an issue as high school players become bigger, better, faster," Lucio said. "This is becoming more of a danger."
The measure also would require schools to regularly recondition helmets that have been in use for more than 10 years. -
