I saw a butterfly that I believe to be a swallow tail that was pretty much black, but I can almost swear I saw purple spots on it. It was going to town on my dad's dill he had planted in the garden. The caterpillars looked very much like the black swallowtail variety except I remember seeing purple instead of the yellow spots. Does anybody have an idea what butterfly that might be or am I loosing my mind?

I think your first guess was right on... Female Black Swallowtails can be virtually void of yellow markings, leaving a mostly black butterfly with deep blue areas on the upper hindwings, and orange-ish red spots on the underside... When they flutter their wings rapidly, our eyes see only a blurred mixture of those two colors - red and blue, which make purple. P. polyxenes would definitely go for Dill as host plant so it's almost certain that's what you've got :-)
