If you don;t care about ADS-B, you probably don't need to watch this. It is a FAA Technical Description of the ADS-B System.

  • @CDB1952 If you listened carefully you would've heard that the FAA's radar system uses transponders to get information of the aircraft, which isn't such a different method from NextGen. So if someone wanted to attack the US, all they would have to do is disable that transponder. This is why it's the AirForce that tracks all air traffic, and home land security doesn't rely on the FAA's systems. If you meant that ADS-B would create a hole in the security system. All radar wouldn't be gone anyways

  • Omitted is the fact that a radar return is available absent functioning airborne equipment. Absent a signal from airborne equipments, ATC still has the Radar return. The ADS-B system appears to replace radar with position from the aircraft. (Note: experimental use it in the Gulf). If true, the system has zero information on aircraft not broadcasting.

This seems an unacceptable risk for not only ATC but also Homeland Security. Surly, ADS-B has means of resolving this gap. What might that be?

  • What you will need is a mode S transponder @ $3,500 and a WASS GPS @ $9,000 and that will give you ADS-B out which is what you must have to fly. ADS-B in is optional. Cha ching!

  • @MetaView7 money my good man.. its all about the money..

  • Wow, his information on the SSR is quite a bit exagerated. The MSSR is much more accurate than he gives it credit for +/- 93 ft to be exact. As well, a single aircraft is interrogated 8 times in a single rotation. With that said, the ADS-B system IS more accurate than the current MSSR as well as the increased data uplink for the pilots making it a better system than the current SSR's.

  • So your low end GA aircraft owner has to fork over $4000 for an ADS-B transmitter. That way he can fly over 10000ft and in Class A, B, and C airspace. Exciting!

  • Why is this taking soooooo loooooong to implement ????

  • arinc 718-2 for ATC and A.735 for TCAS, this new ADS-B "IN" (future) is DO260B (as the latest the committee is working now)

  • whr can i get more info abt "ADS-B separation standards"???

i know yet the there are no stds... but the work is in progress... whr can i get this info...???

  • interesting stuff! hopefully installed on every aircraft, including GA
