This was my first attempt at becoming free of the ever rising cost of gas. It worked, but I could never get more than a trip to town and back on a single charge. The motor I used and my crude controller were not efficient enough. I discovered veggie oil and bought a diesel car, so this one is just sitting for now. It was a fun project, and with a 40 horse motor, I could take off REALLY fast!

  • No mater what motor you used I thing you simply did not have enough battery for the trip you need to do,, those 4 coil type batteries are good but not enough,, and if you compare with the efficiency and reliability of a diesel ,, well you will never look at anything electric with good eyes agin. good job you r good with the lectronics what kind of power transistor did u use ,,,, ..ernest,

  • @n4120p I used Powerex 600 amp IGBTs after I made some pretty smoke and fire out of a long (expensive) string of MOSFETs. And yes, i am still pleased with my diesels running on used cooking oil!

  • You said you scraped this project because you couldn't get back and forth to work. How far is that trip? You might be able to upgrade your battery pack. Battery options are available that are better than the Yellow Tops.

  • 100 mile round trip with 8hr charge while at work.

Running an old car on waste cooking oil is easier and cheaper, been doing it for over three years now. And yes, If I do it again, I will not use sealed batteries.

  • dam! 40 hp? thats like what a 100hp gas engine dude! in a dam bug, im converting my super beetle to electric.

  • It would *almost* stand up on the rear wheels in 1st gear.
