Elctric Guitar Silent Recording Shootout

Guitar: Rittenhouse Stratocaster with Lollar Blackface pickups
play on the neck pickup

Audio Interface: Line6 UX8

Players:
1. POD Farm 2 Plexi 45
2. Waves GTR 3 Drive Amp
3. Blackstar HT-5 cabinet emulated out through Boss Direct Box
4. Sansamp Bass Driver DI through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
5. Xotic BB Preamp MB (mid-boost) through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
6. EGO TM2 Marshall Plexi type through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
7. EGO TM2 Suhr OD100 type through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
8. Maxon OD9 through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
9. REJ Boss BD-2 Super through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)
10. Boss SD-1 MOD through Behringer Ultra-G Direct Box (4x12 cab simulator ON)

I tried to make each track sound as similar as possible, including the overdrive gain, picking punch, and relative volume.

Using the Sansamp Bass Driver for a try. However I did not like the sound through its XLR out (maybe it takes basses better), so I put it go through the Behringer DI and turn on the 4x12 cab simulatoer on.

All those guitar pedals without cab simulator performed better when taking the cab simulator on the Behringer DI together.

Blackstar HT-5 has its own cab simulator, and it worked better through Boss DI rather than the Behringer DI (with cab sim OFF). When the Behringer DI cab simulator is on, it sounds a little bit more weird.

Thanks for your patience, watching, comments, and any criticism.

  • Well done!

I think the BB came in first

    the BOSS BD2 second

    and the Maxon OD9 third...

the Ultra G sounds like a pretty sweet box to have

  • @dracaler

Really thanks for your comment which gave me more confidence~ I also heard some people said that they preferred the initial three ones in this vedio through "real preamp", but what you felt just meant that "Sometimes we do not really need a real amp to record electric guitar " like some others said on the Youtube I've ever seen. It's just up to your tastes.

  • @dracaler

Ultra G, like you said, is a versatile box to have, and it's really much cheaper than lots of other DIs. Maybe one day I will take the H&K Red-box and Carl Martin Rock Bug (both have cab simlation) to have a shootout with the Ultra G.

  • I wish Behringer would do a Palmer PGA-05 type rack processor. I like the Ultra G but it doesn't quite have the in your face sound like Palmer. That said though, It has turned some overly fuzzy direct sounds into nice smooth ones. I think it's good to have one around, and use mine more and more. Using any recording outs is yeah weird sounding. Has to be pure direct tone.

  • @monkey810014 Yea, I'd like to hear the Rock Bug. I have though about getting that thing several times.
