@Mattgasq actually laws can be altered. The law of gravitation proposes by isaac newton has changed. Nothing is inviolable. Theories are the thing most close to being inviolable, since they combine a great amount of fact to form an explanation.

@Mattgasq Sigh....i was just being droll. Thanks for schooling me unnecessarily.

@roguequokka Gravity is a law, evolution is a theory. Laws are inviolable, while theories explain the whys and hows of laws and facts. Theories can be tweaked and altered based on new knowledge about those hows and whys, while laws cannot.

Evolution is just a theory? Really? Ok, well gravity is just a theory too. Come for a walk with me to that cliff over there.

Why saying evolution is "Just a theory" doesn't prove your ignorant, it shows you're hard to deceive.

i love the change of use and understanding of the word THEORY until recent years they trying to back track on the original use of the word, hypothisis or guess was its meaning, it was used so that the scientist could avoid the 17th century "power hungry leaders" of the church would not have them killed.. now it is the top of the mountain, but it can change, while facts remain bottom and are solid.. sounds like the facts are the earth we stand on and theories are the wind that blows by..

Interesting video PJ.

@TheAlphaPyro not that I think evolution was labeled as a theory too quickly. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. Just read a simple book like "Why evolution is true" just for starters (and I mean just for starters)But string theory seems to need to be a bit more robust in the evidence department before we give it that status.

why people on both sides of this debate always insist on using a hierarchy to describe how "important" a theory or law is? It's like trying to say that a car's engine block is more important than the design principles used in the cars design or the other way around. Both are important. I agree that theories ideally represent a unified model of systems that is backed strongly by evidence, but often even in the science community theory is thrown around a little too easily

These creationist "scientists" are bragging that facts about evolution don't matter. No wonder they only promote the "evidence" (or lack thereof) that supports their magical beliefs and ignore the evidence that undermines them. They are intellectually dishonest. Very sad ... They probably even believe what they are saying at some level.

Could someone please tell me what is the difference between Theory and Fact and how much they differ, please say what belief structure you have iswel ...

In science, a "fact" is just a piece of data. in science a "theory" is a collection of these pieces of data that has been tested and found to be a working model. out side of the scientific community,we use theory to mean a hypothysis or hunch but scientist don't. we use "fact" to mean something that is absolutely true. scientists dont. thats where the ignorance comes through. Creationists try to confuse the two so that you dont trust science.

How retarded. 2+2 = 4 is a FACT, but is much less important than the theory that explains WHY it equals 4. Thats the difference, grow a brain.

scientists do not define "facts" and "theory" the same way non scientists do. they mean other things. you argueing the way you define fact is is ignorant. if you cant see that then you have proven your ignorance and cant be expected to understand evolution anyway.

no they arent bragging that "facts" don't matter. the definition of what a fact is and what a theory is is much different from a non scientists definition. we define facts as indisputable truths, they dont use the word 'fact" the same way. if you cant figure that out then you didnt listen at all and already made up your mind when you know nothing about science which makes you the intellectually dishonest one.
