NXT-based 3D scanner, programmed with pbLua (http://www.hempeldesigngroup.com/lego/pbLua/)
Scans assembled and processed with Meshlab (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/), a tool developed with the support of the Epoch NOE

This thing kept me busy for a while...
- Build a NXT based 3D scanner with a needle probe
- program it using pbLua, debug it.
- Scan top/back/front/side (each scan lasts several hours)
- Learn the use of Meshlab, assemble the scans
- Rebuild eyes and bottom tube.

  • How sensitive is the distance output? to the millimeter?

  • @ghostalin

Much better, resolution is about 0.005mm! Of course precision is lower because of mechanical flexibility, something around 0.1mm

  • @PhiloYT

    Damn!

Using only the NXT packaged distance sensor?

I'm considering buying some lego mindstorms, would you say that its worth it?

    Where should I start?

  • @ghostalin

No, the distance sensor resolution is indeed 1cm. You may find many more details on this project here on the write-up page listed in video details.

Definitely yes, it's worth it ;o) You may contact me by email using the address listed at bottom of my "philohome" webpage.

  • It takes several hours to scan each side (but the scanner works on itself!). Reconstructing the shape (alignment, filtering...) takes about one hour, less when you get used to Meshlab.
