Considered the first commercial builder of wood and canvas canoes, E.H. Gerrish produced the two pictured here prior to 1900. Very early Gerrish canoes closely resemble the birch barks which Evan Gerrish paddled as a guide in 19th Century Maine waters. By the time Gerrish retired in 1909, his canoes had seats and open gunwales, and appear much like "modern" wood/canvas canoes. Contact the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association at www.wcha.org for additional information on these and other historic canoes.

  • I wonder if the Gerrish canoes are easier to navigate than the later ones with seats. Perfect music, btw!

  • Music is from "The Best of Altan".

The Gerrish canoes without seats are his earlier ones, which more closely resemble birch bark canoes in appearance and in the way they handle. The smaller of the canoes pictured here (the blue one) is a very sweet, responsive little boat. A canoe builder in Ontario, Pam Wedd, took the lines off this canoe and builds a beautiful little solo reproduction of it.
