One of the great drug songs - up there with John Prime's "Sam Stone" and Neil Young's "Tonight's The Night", Needle Of Death" was inspired by the heroin death of one of Bert's friends. The song is sensitive and has a simple truth in the telling which time has not eroded.

I think you'll find Jim Fitzpatrick is the one that made it disrespectful, he took the original photo of Che Guevara by Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez and turned it into a corporate logo and made money off of Che's image, i on the other hand don't profit at all from my concept of the image. It's free to the people.

I'm 57. Was an addict an alcoholic. Got sober 25 yrs ago. I still think it is a choice. Everyone has problems and pain. I have rheumatoid arthritis now. Alot of pain off and on. 24/7. I COULD do Percoset/Oxycodone/Vicodin if I chose. It is available if I want it. I don't though. Could...but I don't. Choice. I never bought the "poor me" argument. Didn't. Don't.

You can call it what you want as far as "choice" goes but I gave up both cigarettes and substances and if I can do it others can do it. I'm not different from 90% of other people. I think you have to have the capacity to be "honest." That is essential. I was about 31 and I realized I was beginning to physically and mentally deteriorate. I realized if I wanted to at least have the chance to do something with my life I needed to stop and I did. I got sick of cigarettes a few years later.

I think they call that "chipping" don't they Cedric? I remember the movie "Panic in Needle Park" with Al Pacino. Al's brother in that movie was a "weekender." "I'm just chippin." I don't think that has worked too well historically especially with heroin. My argument for sobriety is pretty simple now. I think it is a better way of life. I think the sober life is a happier life from a 24/7 aspect. I've lived both and though getting high was really fun at times overall the other is better.

Just to correct you there - Jim never made money from the image, has recently given the rights to Che's family, and was supportive of moves to have a statue of che in Ireland.

I don't need to read Capital to know of Bolshevik horrors. In fact, I would say that because you think the answer is in a huge economics tome, you overlook the immense human misery that Marx & Lenin brought into the world. Yes, Marx AND Lenin. Marx never gave said how to bring his vision about, so Lenin put theory into practice and all the progressives clapped and cheered, until they really understood what was meant by "dictatorship of the proletariat".
