The earliest record of a weir on the Langdale site is in 1714. A weir was constructed on the site of the current weir around 1830; it provided water to power the Elterwater Gunpowder works and is visible on the very first Ordnance Survey maps.
The first breach in the weir was caused by a huge storm in December 2008, the flooding in November 2009 caused a further section to collapse.
Work commenced in the Autumn of 2010. This was overseen by Andy Dawson of the Langdale Estate and carried out by Traditional Stonecraft and a local team. The intention was to repair the weir sympathetically using materials and techniques familiar to those who had been responsible for the last major repair in 1898.
The weir has now been fully repaired how it would have been back in the early 1900's.
