The controversial software filter Green Dam is again in the spotlight.

On Monday, the U.S. Embassy released a statement expressing concern over the software's restrictions on the Internet and freedom of expression.

An unnamed U.S. official told Reuters that the U.S. would like Chinese officials to revoke the order to make the software mandatory on all computers sold in the Mainland starting July 1.

Critics say the software filter will further tighten Chinas Internet censorship. Experts have also found numerous security vulnerabilities in the program.

Meanwhile, some Chinese Internet users, like Beijing artist Ai Weiwei, are calling for an Internet boycott on July 1. The boycott is meant to protest the release of Green Dam.

Despite growing pressure, the Chinese regime is not backing down. The state-run China Daily said yesterday that the July 1 deadline remains in effect.
