No, Johnny Cash did not do a version of this Richard Thompson song. The Tear Stained Letter that Cash sings is a completely different song. I can see how having the same title would have fooled someone of your obviously vast musical knowledge...
I saw these guys a few years ago at The Boulder Theater, in Colorado. Pete Zorn blew EVERYone away that night during "Shoot Out the Lights" -- he played the most incredible, tortured mandolin solo anyone has ever heard. It sounded like he had a whammy bar and was channeling Jimi Hendrix.
RT took his last solo and was so inspired by Pete that he was just cranking away at the tuning pegs like mad!! I don't think these guys even NEED strings! Ha!
Cheers for this one, great show and night out for me an' the wifes anniversary at the Old Fruitmarket. Always great value and rarely, for a talented artist, doesn't take hinself seriously.
Geez ~ are you guys performers? song writers? Once every blue moon, you get an inspiration to write something both creative and fun, and kickin' ass, if you're lucky enough. Sharing it with people that help keep you doing what you do is a blessing for a musician. Felonius, I doubt you've been to every gig that RT has played. And if you hate this, do like anything else RT has done, and if not, then why waste your energy fouling this site? The rollicking life should be savored, not dissed.

I, for one, love it--but I could see how it could get tedious. I'm a guitarist, and he always pulls out tricks on this tune.

I really hate this song. I wish he'd stop playing it at every gig!
