In 1978, the band Chicago was hit by two major blows that nearly ended their career. First, they stopped working with James William Guercio who had been their producer and mentor through 11 platinum albums. Second, they sadly lost guitarist Terry Kath to an accidental gunshot wound. While the band nearly broke up, they ultimately decided to carry on with a new producer (Phil Ramone), new guitarist (Donnie Dacus) and new album ("Hot Streets"). That year, they hit the road on tour with a mini orchestra, in support of Hot Streets which would go platinum, hit #12 on the charts and yield two top 15 hits. During the tour, Chicago dusted off an old album cut , the country-tinged FLIGHT 602.

  • This really could have been a hit, I think. But because it lacks the trademark Chicago horn section, my guess is that the guys in the band voted and nixed it as a single from the gitgo. Same goes for "Gone Long Gone" on _Hot Streets_ album.

This one is a lovely, single Damask rose, made long before Chicago settled on cranking out power ballads assembly-line style.

  • @funch357 I think Flight 602 was a popular album cut. It ended up making the original Chicago boxset which included all singles and FM played album cuts. Gone Long Gone was actually the third single off of HOT STEETS.

  • I've always thought of this as one of the most honest and accurate reactions to unexpected stardom. Just an honest, gut-level reaction to all the expectations heaped on them when they were all 24, 25 years old and "Make Me Smile" them superstars. And you know what, today, people don't write about these feelings, they just tweet them, so songs like this are unique to the 1970s,

  • Interesting this seems to be the only youtube recording of this song by Chicago.

  • OUTSTANDING VERSION OF A CHICAGO

  • @spacepatrolman actually i think he was using a yamaha cs80 i think it was called which was polyphonic.really early preset type still programmable.they used it alot on hot streets

  • Or ye trusty olde Mellotron.

  • @funch357 sounds like a synthesizer there is no organ there was a woodwind synth then but you couldnt play chords on it

  • @funch357 roll with it
