@ElliottDobson Agree with everything you say about the TriStar, but the fact remains that maintenance is a problem in African aviation. Of course in good condition a TriStar is a strong, sturdy, solid and safe aircraft, but like any ageing machine it needs constant attention to keep it so. As soon as parts become scarce, and poorly trained aircraft technicians/engineers are rife, the aircraft's safety is compromised. 727s are great little birds, but they often go down in Africa for this reason.

THE RUNWAY LOOKS LIKE SHIT!!!!

Generally in DRC all our airlines are unsafe unfortunately, all of them. One simple question you should asked HEWA BORA engineers. WHAT IS THE CYCLE ON THEIR AIRCRAFTS? i BET YOU WILL SURPRISE. MANUFACTURE CYLCE X 2=WAITING 4 DISASTER

Old planes are as safe as new planes. In Iran, there are 35-year old 707s (707s!), 747s (inc four SPs), even older 727s that were built in 1972. All operate with a flawless safety record. It is true Iran has a high accident rate, but all the fatal crashes there have been small independent airlines operating Russian metal, Il-62 and especially the Tu-154.
And of the geriatric widebody fleet in the world (ie old 747s at Orient Thai, DC10s at Biman) - again, the accident rate is flawless.

Sorry to call you out here, but you don't have the first clue what you are talking about, mate. The Tristar wasn't renewed because it was a *commercial* failure not a *safety* failure as you are suggesting. Douglas managed to squeeze out the DC-10 before the TriStar was available. In the end, Douglas produced what history recalls to be a dangerous plane while Lockheed decided to end all commercial production following the DC-10/L-1011 competition.

I think? you're agreeing with me here that it is HBA that is the problem (ie why they are on the EU banned list) I agree with you there, however my orginal comment to yoyoxa was relating to his implication that the aircrafts age (that he got wrong) made it unsafe. The lack of safety is down to HBA, not the aircraft itself.
-
Not the Air plaine but the compagny HBA as they were not another 1 as Lac is nock down by the people who own Hba who are Europeen ,if Lac has a Plaine ,they want any problem to go to any country in Eu or USA see the international accords .

You're not understanding my point here, any aircraft is unsafe in the hands of a bad operator, whether it be a 737, Tristar or a DC-10. I would judge the 737s in the hands of many african carriers to be as unsafe if not more. What im trying to say is if properly maintained the Tristar is safer than most other aircraft, its service history has shown this. The tristar didnt sell as well for many factors, this does not imply it is unsafe, The TU-134 sold well, does that make the epitomy of safety?
-
No it not about size ,your talking to 1 of the 1st guy who touched those Tri stars(HBA) in USA and in kinshasa those plaines are unsafe,if they were they could be renewed as the 737 witch to me and more people are 1 of the safest in the world the proof, they are the most used in the world and renewed by the builder on many series.those people just go there buy coffen and bring it to my country and dont care about the safety.can they bring those plaine in greece or belguim where they are from?
yoyoxa you're an idiot. The first Tristar flew on 16/11/1970. Thats 36 years since the flight of even the prototype! Hewa Bora's aircraft is a 500 series which first flew in 1978 - 28 years ago. The exact aircraft in the video (9Q-CHC) was delivered to Air Canada in 1981 - making it 25, not over 40. The Tristar is one of the safest aircraft flying today - In its flying career no accidents due to mechanical failure - a remarkable achievement, its a shame they probably wont be around much longer.

Correct as you say. If the gas prices weren't so high, we would probably see more of them around. Shame I never got a seat with one. :(
