  • Actually, there is a noticeable rift among the new left "anti-druggists" . I get the impression that David Healey is only qualifyingly blowing his whistle on the pharmaceuticals, and waxes nostalgic, with his longwinded exposition on the "traditional" neuroleptics. Healey is more of the "getting back to the fundamentals" on this drugs and mental illness debate; no danger of rocking the boat. Breggin has managed to alienate many an erstwhile ally. The fog of time will shroud the real reformers.

  • Nowhere in his book "anatomy of an epidemic", is Mr. Whitaker willing to question the basis of madness, and he seems comfortable with the biological explanation of mental illness, in spite of the lack of any real science to back up such a claim by psychiatry. Psychiatrists and doctors have one of the highest rates of suicide of any profession, some three or four fold, and yet, the culture draws from the very profession claiming to have the means of treating others! Social clout, not medicine.

  • CAPITALISM,The minority imposition of greed and private gain across the world , a social reality of utter distortions and dehumanisation for immense humanity , we are humans not machines, we are so suppressed in the employment system to be efficient, efficient, efficient, so the owning class can maximise their profit, our lives has been reduced to their profit motive . CAPITALISM =DEPRESSION

  • great discussion. Parents really need to perhaps spend time with their kids rather than putting them on antidepressants.
