Kernig's Sign is an orthopedic test used to help diagnose nerve root impingment. It is performed by having the patient perform a straight leg raise until there is pain and then relieving the symptoms through knee flexion. A positive test is relief of symptoms with knee flexion. The verbal description for this test was taken from Clinical Skills Documentation Guide for Athletic Training by Amato et al

  • As stated elsewhere in the comments, this is not Kernig's sign. Here described is the "straight leg raise," which indicates a possible prolapsed lumbar disc or highly sensitized sciatic nerve.
