First airing on Saturday, February 3, 2007, this TalkAsia interview with Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Ma Ying-jeou had host Anjali Rao fluffing Ma, pushing his "Mr. Clean" propaganda, and letting him show himself generally talking like a fool with things like (barely a parody-phrase) "I couldn't possibly be guilty of anything because I donated blood a whole bunch of times, and I also donated to charity a lot of that money that rightfully belongs to the taxpayers ot Taiwan." He did say one thing correctly, although it was probably an accident: "No doubt Taiwan is a democratic country."

Chairman Mao-without-the-o spoke in English/Newspeak throughout, and you can know what he's really saying if you listen carefully and frequently visit the Taiwan Matters blog.

  • Chiang Kai Shek fled to Taiwan in 1949. So most Taiwan residents are at MOST three generations separated from the mainland. Their accent is clearly Fujianese. To say Taiwanese are NOT Chinese is a joke! This assumes Taiwan history began in 1949, and everything beforehand does not exist.

Historically, Taiwan was part of China as far back as the Tang Dynasty 607 AD, but taken by Portugal in 1600's, recaptured by China, and then taken by Japan in 1895, until they lost WWII.

  • Thanks for demonstrating the complete lack of logic of those with this "one-people" mentality. Do you know that *most* Taiwanese have Aboriginal DNA? Why does Chinese DNA trump everything? A: Hegemony.

China just celebrated its "60th" birthday last week. What does the Tang Dynasty have to do with anything?

Remember the Treaties of Shimonoseki and San Francisco.

When are *you* going to "respect your neighbors"?

    One China, one Taiwan! 台灣中國,一邊一國!

  • @TimMaddog Chiang Kai Shek broght milions of people to taiwan, i don't understand how *most* Taiwanese have Aboriginal DNA. There are now more than 98% of Han people with less than 2% Aboriginal.

  • @nosranro The Chinese who came to Taiwan w/Chiang Kai-shek as well as in earlier centuries were mostly male. Therefore, many of them married Aboriginals. Chinese DNA doesn't have a higher value than Aboriginal DNA, so to ignore the latter is disingenuous.

In case my words have confused you, I'm not saying that most Taiwanese have "100% Aboriginal DNA" -- just that it is usually ignored by those with the "one people" mentality.

  • edwincheung72, if you read the part about "the only country in the world threatening to invade Taiwan," you'd know that chihchingchen is referring to the PRC.

If Ma is "pro-ROC anti-PRC," as you say, why did he order the removal of ROC flags from venues in Taipei -- even from spectators -- while allowing PRC flags to fly during international competitions taking place there? And why is he so open to the PRC?

  • The Title President which people entrusted him with is only for Western Media and used domestically; he is quite satisfied with PRC addressed him as Mr. Ma instead of Mr. President. As a matter of fact, none of his officer bear proper Title, he even banned KMT De Facto National Flags to be displayed in Taiwan; when meeting PRC under his direct order. Police confiscate flags accused them as conspiracy.

  • ChihChingChen,

This really depends on how you define China. May it be PRC? ROC? or in a broader sense the Chinese nation? Ma Ying-Jeou is a Chinese person pro-ROC anti-PRC. What are you afraid of?

  • he makes me sick

  • He probably means he's Chinese in a cultural sense, like many pro-independence Taiwanese do.
