Vegan food doesn't have to be expensive. You are thinking of prepared vegan food, and of course prepared food is more expensive. At my grocery store, a pound of pasta is about $1, dried beans are $.75-1.80 per pound, most frozen and canned veggies are $1-2 per bag or can, and even though it's november there are still fresh veggies less than $2 a pound.

Compare meat, like cheap hamburger and chicken at $3+ a pound, and at least $10-12 per pound for nicer cuts like steak and filet mignon.

But you're absolutely correct if your read & understand you could have a pretty healthy diet without killing a single animal.
