The removal of landmines from the Northern soil is not an easy task as claimed by opportunist politicos. It is a systematic and accelerated programme mooted by the Government.
The damage done by Prabhakaran, the brutal terrorist leader to the entire country and particularly to the North, is immense. He mined the Northern region which could destroy a large number of lives. The sole desire of the Government and the Security Forces which vanquished terrorism was to resettle the civilians in their places of origin. The removal of landmines is a daunting uphill task as the routing of terrorism. The troops after liberating the Madhu Shrine engaged in demining its environs before permitting devotees to the Church. The troops risked their lives in removing thousands of landmines surrounding the Church. Due to their dedicated task, Catholics were able to celebrate the Madhu feast on a grand scale.
Certain politicos with the intention of achieving parochial aims said that the Government was not endeavouring Northern development as well as resettling the civilians. But, the troops are continuing the removal of mines. The Government has taken optimum measures to resettle the civilians, introducing five strategies for the removal of mines. Even the United States is directly involved in these operations.

The world body is monitoring to ensure that the North is suitable for resettlement. Lauding the Governments programme the United Nations is also contributing to this effort. The Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force is firmly dedicated to bringing spring to the region while shouldering the demining programme. It is a task which is frequently monitored by the Uthuru Wasanthaya officials. Its head and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa also frequent the areas concerned for observation.
