CULTURE 9: MALI: Sekouba Traore-donso n`goni player.

Sekouba Traore is one of the most famous musicians from Mali. He performs traditional hunters repertoir singing and playing DONSO NGONI (hunter harp). Traditionally, SORA - the singer is acompanied by one or more young musicians playing KARIGNAN, a percussion instrument made of metal. Most often, the karignan player is also a `NAAMU TIGI`, a person who reponses with a phrase naamu or another, which confirms that the singer is being listened to with attention. Naamu also points out the importance of the lyrics. The music of Malian hunters, like the music of griots, is composed of verses, in which the story is included, and the chorus, which actually defines the song and which is repeted by young musicians accompanying the main singer. The melodies of donso ngoni, which arent so numerous as the songs sung to them, are a very important element of this music. One of the most widespread and recognised donso ngoni tune is Srabakelen which has a huge number of songs belonging to it.

Sekouba Traore to jeden z najsłynniejszych muzyków z Mali. Wykonuje tradycyjny repertuar myśliwych śpiewając i grając na donso ngoni (harfie myśliwych). SORA śpiewak jest tradycyjnie wspierany przez jednego, lub kilku młodych muzyków grających na KARIGNIANIE, instrumencie perkusyjnym wykonanym z metalu. Najczęściej grający na karignianie jest jednocześnie „NAAMU TIGI, czyli osobą, która odpowiada słowem „naamu, lub inną frazą potwierdzającą, że śpiewak jest słuchany z uwagą. Naamu podkreśla także wagę treści warstwy lirycznej utworu. Muzyka malijskich myśliwych, podobnie jak griotów, komponowana jest ze strof, które opowiadają historie, oraz refrenu, który właściwie definiuje pieśń i jest powtarzany przez młodych muzyków akompaniujących śpiewakowi. Melodie donso ngoni, które nie są aż tak liczne, jak melodie pieśni do nich wyśpiewywane, są bardzo ważnym elementem tej muzyki. Jedną z najbardziej rozpowszechnionych i znanych melodii donso ngoni jest „Srabakelen", z ogromną ilością śpiewanych do niej pieśni.
