Ida Anderson long lining clinic.

I have been interested in learning to long line and the perfect opportunity showed up. This is the first time for Danny to work in long lines and the first time I have ever worked with long lines. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I tried to include clips that were also informative. (as I'm sure it gets boring watching us walk around)

The first two clips were a bit goofy. He came around the first time and was completely laid back about the whole thing he decided to start sniffing and poking around the deck. The clip after Ida had lightly touched him with the whip and he got a bit 'offended'.

You may also notice a change in my line on the first day. Her equipment had not arrived, so we were using someone elses until hers got there most conviently during my lesson time.

Hope you enjoy the clips. If you are curious about anything don't be afraid to ask.

  • Why do you have the horse counter flexed all the time?

  • All the time would imply just that - all the time. I only noticed counter flexion a few points in the entire video. The most being at the close end of the arena because he was interested in sniffing and poking his nose into the stands. Otherwise he really isn't. Other is just bits and bobbles of normal flexing or movement. Not to say of course I could have messed up and asked a little too much at one point or two, but I didn't see it as you say 'all the time'.

  • You have not "broken" many horses,I can see that, your left hand,or your student has problems that can be over looked.

Your horse is here to help you.

Your horses know more than you want

  • If you had taken the time to read the description you would know this is the first time I had ever long lined. I am not going to be a pro the moment I touch the lines, as wonderful as that would have been. This is also the horses first time with long lines, but he is not an unstarted baby. He is solid 2nd level. I am not sure what you are seeing with my left hand, you may need to be more specific.

  • she didn't have the horse counter flexed the whole time, also to ride a horse flexed or counter flexed is a good thing! Keeps the horse listening to you and thinking about what to do next.

Most top riders use that technique (watch international showjumpers when they come into a ring, they will normall flex the horses head each way a few times)

  • Thanks for sharing. I am starting my young mare on long lines and this was informative and fun to see !

  • everything echoes couldn't understand a thing

  • I think you did a wonderfu ljob at your first time long lining. Incase those people who give negative comments cant see is that no one is perfect and that an expert as something once was a begginer, she is doing an exellent job and the horse was really good for his first time being long lined.

  • a lunge cavveson is a lunging 'bridle' with rings attached to the noseband at 3 diff positions. Lunge rein is clipped to those rings during lunging as to not interfeare with the bit. It can be leather or webbing :)

  • Thank you for sharing HPG. This got me so interested that I ordered a longlining DVD from Ellen O's Hästträning's site. It looks very practical and clear.
