I rescued this Shiba from an animal shelter and treated her for 2 weeks for kennel cough. The Baytril and Amoxicillin seemed to cure her sneezing and runny nose. But now a 1 month after I rescued her, she still has this strange breathing issue. Bloodwork is normal for an older dog. She does have a grade 3 out of 6 heart murmur, and Xrays show a slightly enlarged heart but no fluid in the lungs. She only breathes this way when she's excited.

  • Update: On Jan 4, 2011 I took this Shiba to the Univ. of California at Davis veterinary school to be seen by specialist. Her diagnosis is "Ventricular Septal Defect" .. she has a hole in her heart. This allows oxgenated blood from the lungs to mix with oxygen depleted blood from the body to mix. Her blood oxygen level is 61-74%, much lower than the normal 95%. So she is gasping for oxygen when excited. I have her on meds but heart surgery is out of the question. She remains very sweet.
