Anonymous. Ode. epicwin ??? Recent editorial takes an interesting perspective: cOMMENTARY | Every week, we hear a story or two about a new target of the hacker group Anonymous. Within the last week, Anonymous has claimed it would take down the Fox News website and Mexico's Zeta Cartel. Even though many targets have been announced over the last few months, very few have had to deal with an impressive strike. Has the power of Anonymous waned, or has the group spread itself too thin?
In the early days of the arrest of Julian Assange and the financial severing of WikiLeaks, Anonymous and LulzSec spearheaded a handful of impressive strikes. Visa, MasterCard, Amazon and PayPal felt the wrath of the hacker group through being taken down or frozen over the matter of a week. Some small government websites were also taken down, and Anonymous became a household name.
Many of the early attacks were made in conjunction with the hacker group Lulz Security. LulzSec is the group that not only compromised the Sony security system and led to the online gaming portal to go down. They also claimed to have taken over the CIA website and gotten that taken offline. In July, LulzSec stated that they were disbanding. While there have been many called attacks by Anonymous since the end of July, the major ones have not apparently been successful.
We also have the argument that maybe Anonymous has spread itself too thin. Maybe announcing so many targets is damaging. Maybe they are trying to do too much at one time and wearing out their own resources. Instead of announcing one strong target and tossing everything at it, the idea of selecting multiple target is a sign of weakness and poor planning. When you factor in the number of arrests that the group has had to face, are they down to their bare bones?
About a month ago, the hacker group made a bold statement that they would bring down Wall Street due to the media coverage of the Occupy Movement. That never happened. There have been other planned attacks on the US governments that have also never made an impact. The recent statement about bringing down the Fox News website also appears to be a promise that could not be delivered on. Harold Camping has realized that it is time to stop predicting the end of the world. Why can't Anonymous?
