  • my favourite Irish goal of all time.

  • @powerdriller10 could pass the ball very well tho. The likes of Keane, Towensend & Houghton could pass the ball very well. Jack was slammed a few times by former Irish players most notably John Giles & Eamon Dunphy for not getting the best out of the more cultured players Ireland had during his time like Liam Brady, McGrath, Keane, Houghton, Ronnie Whelan etc... The long ball worked alot but alot of people at the time felt he was using it far too much.

  • @powerdriller10 Well I think you watched the video there must of been 15 passes in that move leading up to the goal & not one of them along ball. The 2 goals Mexico scored I have to say were of very high quality aswell. The long ball was always a big part of Jacks game plan but not his main part, his main part was to press very high up the pitch & pressurise the opposing teams defence into making mistakes. Although I agree he play long ball too much. he had good players who

  • If that Ireland team had played in a cooler climate they would have made the semis

  • This was the strongest Ireland team ever!!

I think the heat and humidity got to them in the end..

Was that Charlton´s tactic? Knocking long and high and try to head over the mexes?Charlton really did not study the rival. The mex goalkeeper was short but agile, and Mexico had 5 players 1.85 and over. The tallest player in the game was mexican, Zague 1.94 mts. And Mexes prepared for months against still ball high kicks and quick counterattacks. In fact, mexes practiced moving the last defense line ahead 15 meters, but in real games shifted back 10 meters and placed a fast defender behind.

  • @powerdriller10 Couldnt agree more, our preperation was a joke, our "game plan" was to knock it long, tus giving away the ball, then run after it, making ourselves physically wrecked, and then he would make sure there was bottles of water dotted around the pitch, we could have gone so much furthur, Ireland golden generation wasted on bad tactics:(

Ok, but the Irish team played better in the last 15 minutes.

The Mexican team prepared in hot and humid Acapulco, so the mex was more or less adapted. Real conditions in Mexico City and its surroundings, against what Europeans believe, are quite temperate, about 25-28 Centigrades and not so humid at peak hot hours in the Summer, far from the conditions in Florida. The Mexican coach, knowing the game sites, programmed the training accordingly, while Jackie Charlton failed to do so.

Looks can be deceiving, Staunton in particular suffered badly from the heat, Roy Keane was badly dehydrated then asked by fifa for a unrine sample after the game, Tommy Coyne also suffered from it, the whole squad found it hard going, they played their football in England, hottest it ever gets these parts is light drizzle:)
